I offer both verbal and written appraisals of value for insurance coverage, estate settlement and private resale. Fees are based upon the amount of time it takes to establish the value and not on the value of the instrument itself. I cannot give appraisals, even "ball-park" estimates, WITHOUT ACTUALLY HAVING THE INSTRUMENT OR BOW IN MY HANDS. Many instruments bear fictitious labels. The most common ones we see are facsimiles of those found in instruments by Antonio Stradivari, members of the Guarneri family, members of the Amati dynasty, and those found in instruments made by Jacob Stainer. Most of these instruments were made in various communities and workshops in Germany and Czechoslovakia as well as from several areas in France. For the most part, these instruments and their facsimile labels were made not to deceive the buyer but simply to show what model it may be based upon. They were made by the hundreds of thousands principally between the early 1800's up until World War II. |
